tribes are the indigenous peoples of the Northwest coast of
North America along the Pacific Ocean
- Fact 3 - These Northwest Indian
were static tribes of tribe of hunter fishers. Men were in
charge of hunting for food and protecting the camp and the women
were in charge of the home and land
- Fact 2 - Idaho
- The Indians of Idaho were the Lemhi Shoshone Bannock,
Nez Perce, Salish, Paiutes and the Piegan Indians
- Fact 3 - Names of Border States:
Montana Nevada Oregon Utah Washington Wyoming
- Fact 4 -
Features of the area: Plains in the south,
central region of mountains, canyons, gorges; sub-alpine northern
region.
- Fact 5 - The Lemhi tribes, aka Lemhi-Shoshone
people originated in the Lemhi Valley in Idaho. Sacajawea was a
Lemhi Shoshone woman acted as interpreter and negotiator to the
the Lewis and Clark expedition as they made their way through
the west to the Pacific Ocean in 1805
- Fact 6 - The
Shoshone
tribe aka Shoshone lived in many locations including Idaho. The
Shoshoni were a tribe of nomadic hunters.
- Fact 7 - The Bannock, or Banate tribe, originated
in Western Idaho and spoke the Northern Paiute language. The
Bannock tribe developed a horse culture and were closely
associated with the Northern Shoshone with whom they eventually
merged. In 1868 the Bannock tribe was restricted to the Fort
Hall Reservation in Idaho. They experienced a terrible famine
which together with broken treaties led to the Bannock War of
1878.
- Fact 8 - The
Nez Perce
originally inhabited the
lower Snake River and its tributaries in western Idaho. The name
Nez Perce, meaning pierced nose, was given by the French because
some tribe members wore nose pendants.
- Fact 9 -
The Salish were also referred to as Flathead Indians. The name
is often said to derive from the flat head produced by binding
infants' skulls with boards. The coastal Salish engaged in
fishing and hunted various marine animals, whereas the Salish
who lived in inland regions fished in rivers and streams and
hunted game.
- Fact 10 - The Paiutes: There were
two distinct groups of the Paiute ( meaning pīt) tribe - the
Southern Paiute and the Northern Paiute. The Northern Paiute
were more warlike than their southern relatives. The Southern
Paiute are often called the Diggers because they subsisted on
root digging.
- Fact 11 - The Piegan Indians southernmost tribe of
the
Blackfoot confederacy.
- Fact 12 -
Longhouses were the types of permanent houses and homes used by
hunter fishers
- Fact 13 -
The Northwest Indians used cedar-bark or dugout canoes
- Fact 14 - Face paint / War Paint:
Men wore
bright face paint in times of war. Tribal tattoos were also used
to decorate their faces and bodies
