Discovery and History of the Element Aluminum
Aluminum was discovered by Hans Christian Oersted in 1825.
Isolated by Friedrich Wohler in 1827. Charles Martin Hall received
a patent in 1886. Davy had proposed the name Aluminium for this
metal in 1807 before it had been Isolated, but later agreed to
change it to Aluminum to conform with the "ium" ending of most
other named elements. Aluminium remained an acceptable
alternative spelling to Aluminum until 1925 when the American
Chemical Society chose to spell the metal's name Alumunum in all
their new publications.
