Short History of
Idaho - Explored by the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1805. Region held jointly by Great Britain and the United
States from 1818 to 1846. Idaho became a separate territory in
1863.

Origin of the name - Idaho is a coined or invented word supposedly
meaning the "gem of the mountains. Congress was going to name
the Pike's Peak but George M. Willing, a mining lobbyist,
suggested the 'Shoshone Indian word' of 'Idaho' meaning "Gem
of the Mountains. Although Congress eventually became aware
that the name was made up by this time the name had been
adopted by popular consent
