  • Fact 2: The rainbow fish was originally described as a ‘Sunfish’ in 1843

  • Fact 3: As their name suggests, the rainbow fish is colored like a rainbow, they are a peaceful fish and make a beautiful addition to a tropical aquarium
  • Fact 4: They vary in size, the smallest species of rainbow being less than 3cm in length with the larger species up to 20cm
  • Fact 5: They are members of the family Melanotaeniidae. The name is derived from the word “melano” meaning black in Ancient Greek and “taenia” meaning ribbon.
  • Fact 6: Rainbowfish are omnivorous; they feed on small crustaceans, insect larvae and algae
  • Fact 7: Juvenile rainbow fish are dull in appearance; their color develops as they mature
  • Fact 8: If the water conditions in the tanks are not right, the rainbow fish can be found towards the bottom of the tank with their fins stuck to their bodies. Test the water on a regular basis and ensure the filter is working to avoid this occurring
  • Fact 9: Rainbow fish are split into three families: Pseudomugilidae (Blue Eyes), Melanotaeniidae (Rainbowfishes) and Atherinidae (Silversides)
